Java for Windows Users

Unfortunately due to legal issues between Sun Microsystems the original developer of Java, and Microsoft, it appears that Microsoft are no longer supporting the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine with installations of Windows XP and other more recent MS Operating Systems.

Please visit the following Microsoft Webpage which explains how they will be implementing the migration from the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine to the Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment.

As the end user this need not be a problem for you; the Java Applets used on this site run equally well under both Sun and Microsoft Java Virtual Machines.

The Sun Java Runtime Environment works equally well within Internet Explorer, and we recommend installing the Sun Microsystems version.  However, there are several routes to updating your Browser to make this site fully functional: -

1.

Simply install the full Netscape 7.1 browser from: -

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp

This browser comes with the full Sun Microsystems Java Virtual Machine, which will also operate under Internet Explorer.

2.

UK users can purchase a copy of Personal Computer World, or PCPlus, both of which come with a free CD ROM that usually includes a copy of Netscape 7.1

3.

Download the Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment directly from Sun Microsystems at: -

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

4.

Given the migration from Microsoft Java Virtual Machine to Sun Microsystems Java Run Time Environment, we do not recommend installing the Microsoft JVM however, if you feel happier with MicroSoft you can download the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine from: -
