Creating a Garden
'Knowing Where
The Sun Shines'

Creating A Garden As discussed elsewhere on this site, plants need amongst other things: - air, water, suitable soil, and the correct light levels if they are to thrive. Some plants prefer full shade and others full sun, whilst many will thrive in conditions where they can be in full shade for part of the day and enjoy full sun for the rest.

Some plants, like peonies, can suffer damage to their flowers if their buds are frozen overnight and then quickly thawed as the sun strikes them in the morning.

Therefore it makes sense to understand how the sun affects parts of your garden at different times of day, and at various times of the year.

If you ever needed an excuse for lazing in the garden with a glass of wine on a beautiful Summer's day, now you have it. Get your sun bed out, accompanied by a small table plus an hour timer, pencil and some notepaper, and sit yourself in a position where you can observe which parts of the garden are in shade or receiving full sun at different times of the day. Now you are ready to enjoy a lazy day, where the only time you will have to move is to occasionally visit the chiller and pour yourself a glass of wine.

Draw yourself a few rough maps of your garden ready to mark the relevant areas of sun and shade at hourly intervals, do not forget to note the north-south orientation and where the sunlight is coming from, now complete your first rough map, set the hour timer and get down to the hard work of enjoying an hour of total relaxation.

Now you have established which parts of the garden are in full shade all day, which enjoy unbroken full sun and those areas where the garden receives dappled or partial shade, you are now equipped to select plants that will thrive in such conditions, or to plan the redesign of your garden to suit the plants you wish to grow.
