Acaena
New Zealand Burr
ROSACEAE

Herbaceous Perennial

Acaena. saccaticupula "Blue Haze"

Acaena is a genus of mainly low growing, creeping herbaceous perennials, which form dense mats of foliage. Acaena are evergreen in all but the most severe of winters.

Spreading by virtue of its easily rooting stems Acaena makes an excellent ground cover plant, although some species can be invasive.

During the Summer Acaena is covered with round flower heads that later develop into the characteristic spiny red burrs that give this plant its common name.

New Zealand Burrs are esteemed for their colourful leaves; having, dependent upon species, glaucous blue, or bronze foliage.
