Shrubs and Perennial Succulents

A genus of perennial succulents some of which are short-lived, and evergreen succulent shrubs, grown for their rosettes of bright-green, blue-green, or sometimes black-purple fleshy leaves. Most species grow from Autumn through to Spring and are semi-dormant during the Summer. Aeoniums produce flowers in colours that range from white through pale or bright yellows and onto pale-pinks and coppery-reds.

Form: A bushy perennial succulent
Height: 2ft (60cm)
Spread: 3ft (1m)
Foliage: Branched stems are crowned with a rosette, up to 6in (15cm) across, of broadly lance-shaped, glossy, bright-green leaves. 
Flowers: In spring, cones of small star-shaped, golden flowers are produced on stems of 2 to 3 years old, which then die back after flowering.

Form: A bushy, perennial succulent, with freely branching stems, each carrying rosettes of leaves 5in (12cm) across.

Foliage: Blue-green succulent leaves, often having a red margin.
Flowers: In Spring producing a terminal spike of star-shaped, pink-tinged, pale-yellow flowers. 

 


Aeonium. tabuliforme

Form: A monocarpic, prostrate, almost stemless, short-lived perennial succulent, having a basal rosette spreading to 12in (30cm) across.
Height: 2in (5cm)
Spread: 12in (30cm)
Foliage: Bright green succulent leaves
Flowers: In Spring producing star-shaped yellow flowers, following which it dies.

Propagate from seed.

 


Aeonium. 'Zwartkop'

Form: A bushy, perennial succulent, having stems which are crowned with a rosette of leaves, 6in (15cm) across.  
Height: 2ft (60cm)
Spread: 3ft (1m)
Foliage: Narrow dark-purple leaves.
Flowers: In Spring producing pyramids of golden flowers on 2 to 3 year old stems which then die.  

 


 

Cultivation: -

Prefers partial shade and exceptionally well-drained, fertile soil. 

 

Propagation: -

Grow from seed sown in Summer; or

Branching species can be propagated from stem cuttings taken in Spring or Summer. Allow the cut surface to form a callus before inserting in compost.
