Alliums are distinctive bulbous perennials that produce round or pendant clusters of bell shaped flowers in spring or summer, some up to 12in (30cm) across.

Alliums range in size from small plants suitable for the rock garden, through to giants of some 6ft (2m) tall.

Form: Bulb
Height: 6-8in (15-20cm)
Spread: 5-6in (12-15cm)
Foliage: Producing 1-3 broad, prostrate, basal, grey green leaves.
Flowers: In spring producing an almost stemless, spherical umbel 2-3in (5-7cm) across with 30-40 star-shaped, white to pinkish-white flowers with red centres.

Foliage: Narrow, erect leaves are held on the lower third of the slender flower stems
Flowers: The blue, 30-50 star-shaped, flowers are produced in dense, spherical, umbels of 1.25-1.75in (3-4cm) across during summer.

Foliage: Linear, semi-erect, basal leaves die away before flowering.

Foliage: Having tufts of narrow, erect, basal, leaves.
Flowers: In summer each stem produces a small, loose umbel 0.5-1.5in (1.5-4cm) wide, of up to 30 bell shaped, dark reddish-purple flowers, later turning to sharply pointed seeds.

Form: A clump forming bulb

Foliage: Linear semi-erect leaves are produced on the lower half of the slender flower stem.
Flowers: In summer, loose umbels of up to 60 small, bell-shaped, yellow flowers are carried on thin arching stems

Foliage: Long, wide, semi-erect, basal leaves.
Flowers: In summer a stout stem carries a dense spherical umbel 5in (12cm) across, of 50 or more star-shaped, purple, flowers.

Foliage: Mid-green, basal, leaves, die away by flowering time.
Flowers: In summer producing numerous star-shaped, purplish-pink, flowers in dense, spherical umbels 4in (10cm) across.

Flowers: This spring and early flowering bulb produces loose domed umbels of up to 10 widely bell shaped, deep rose-pink flowers

Foliage: Leaves are linear, erect, and basal.
Flowers: In summer, up to 15 bell-shaped, blue flowers 0.25-0.5in (1-2cm) long are borne in a small pendant umbel.

Foliage: A single, semi-erect, basal, grey-green leaf.
Flowers: In late spring producing up to 30 purplish-pink flowers in a domed umbel 2in (5cm) across.

Some need fertile soil in semi-shade, and others a well drained fully sunny aspect
