Althaea are woody based perennials and annuals, and are similar to Hollyhocks (Alcea), but have smaller flowers which are held on short stalks, unlike those of the Hollyhock.

The blooms appearing from mid-summer and until early autumn arriving in shades of lilac, deep-pink, or rose-pink, sometimes having a darker eye.

Althaea have dark-green, toothed, or lobed leaves, often much paler on the underside. The stems are strong and wiry, and generally do not require any support.

Cultivation: -

Althaea will tolerate a wide range of conditions, but do best in moist, well drained, fertile soil.

 

Propagation: -

The seed of perennial forms should be planted in mid-summer, and transplant during early autumn. 

The seed of annual forms should be planted in pots in late winter, or directly where they are to grow, in mid-spring. 

 

Fully Hardy

Pests & Diseases: -

Althaea are subject to rust, and infected plants should be burnt or otherwise disposed of, do not compost them.
