Andromeda comprises a group of evergreen shrubs with an open twiggy habit, which only thrive in acid (lime-free) humus-rich, and moist soil conditions. 

The Bog Rosemary resembles Heather clothed in long, narrow, green leaves, and enjoys the same conditions as Ericas. 
   

Varieties: -

Andromeda. polifolia

 

Form: An evergreen, open, twiggy shrub. 
Hardiness: Fully Hardy
Height: 12-18in (30-45cm) 
Spread: 24in (60cm) 
Foliage: Having narrow, lanceolate, leathery, glossy, green leaves.  
Flowers: During Spring and early-Summer, producing clusters of pitcher-shaped, pink flowers. 


Andromeda. polifolia 'Alba'



Form: An evergreen,twiggy shrub. 
Hardiness: Fully Hardy
Height: 18in (45cm) 
Spread: 24in (60cm) 
Foliage: Having leathery, lance-shaped, dark-green leaves 
Flowers: During Spring and early-Summer, producing pitcher-shaped, white flowers.  

Andromeda. polifolia 'Compacta' 

 

Form: An evergreen, compact, twiggy shrub
Hardiness: Fully Hardy
Height: 6-9in (15-23cm)
Spread: 12in (30cm)
Foliage: Having lance-shaped, glossy, dark-green leaves. 
Flowers: During Spring and early-Summer, producing delicate clusters of pitcher-shaped, coral pink flowers, with white undertones. 

 


 

Cultivation: -

Grow in moist, acid soil, with plenty of well-rotted organic matter added to it. Andromeda enjoy either full-sun or partial shade.

 

Propagation: -

By layering, or softwood cuttings taken during Summer.
