A genus of annuals and evergreen perennials, usually forming compact cushions, with soft, hairy leaves.

Many species are suitable for the cold greenhouse, or troughs with winter cover.

Foliage: Has small rosettes of pointed leaves with hairy margins.
Flowers: In spring two or more stems bearing heads of tiny pink single flowers rise above the rosettes

Foliage: Rosettes of leathery, spoon-shaped or oblong leaves.
Flowers: In Spring producing small heads of 4-10 flattish, pink flowers, with yellow eyes that age to red.

Form: An evergreen cushion forming perennial
Height: 1in (2.5cm)
Spread: 4in (10cm)
Foliage: Having densely packed narrow grey leaves.
Flowers: In Spring producing a profusion of stemless white flowers.

Needs careful cultivation, and a deep collar of grit under the cushion.

Form: Evergreen mat forming perennial
Height: 1in (2.5cm)
Spread: 8in (20cm)
Foliage: Having very hairy rosettes of tiny leaves.
Flowers: In spring producing umbels of small, white flowers with a yellow eye that ages to red.

 


Androsace. villosa var jacquemontii Form: Evergreen mat forming perennial
Height: 1in (2.5cm) 
Spread: 8in (20cm)
Foliage: Having very hairy rosettes of tiny grey-green leaves.
Flowers: In late spring, early summer, producing red stems carrying umbels of small, pinkish-purple flowers with a yellow eye.

 


 

 

Cultivation: -

Requires well drained soil, in full sun, and the added protection of a collar of grit under the cushion forming species. Some of the species require acidic soil conditions. All Androsace resent wet foliage in winter.

 

Propagation: -

Plants can be propagated by end shoot cuttings taken during the summer, or by seed in the autumn.

 

Fully to Frost Hardy

Pests & Diseases: -

Androsace are prone to attack by both Aphids and Botrytis.
