BRASSICACEAE/CRUCIFERAE
Herbaceous Perennials

|
Producing mats or
low hummocks of tiny evergreen leaves, obscured by pink, magenta, mauve,
or purple flowers, Aubretia makes an excellent spring flowering ground
cover plant, suitable for the border edge, the rock garden, crevices in walls
and the gaps between patio-slabs.
Silver or
gold variegated varieties continue to provide interest all year
round.

Cultivation: -
Grow in any reasonably
fertile, well-drained soil, in full sun, preferably with a pH of 7 or
slightly higher (neutral to alkaline). The
clumps should be cut back hard after flowering to maintain the compact
habit of the plants and to encourage new growth at the centres, which can
become woody and bare. |

|
Propagation: -
Sow seed in the
cold-frame during spring or autumn. [Named varieties rarely come true to
type from seed] Take
softwood cuttings in early summer, or semi-ripe cuttings in late summer
and early autumn.
