Growing Plants
From Seed

HomePage Nothing can be easier than growing from seed. The whole embryonic plant arrives packaged in a protective shell and is simply awaiting the right conditions to burst forth and grow for you, all you have to do is provide those conditions.

It is not necessary to purchase much equipment  to raise one's own plants from seed, nor does it require much space; a sunny windowsill or two will suffice.

What you do need are clean containers, and good fresh sterile compost.

Poor hygiene is the cause of more fatalities in the seedling nursery than almost anything else, primarily because poor hygiene introduces diseases that can attack seedlings at their most vulnerable stage of life.

Most plants are very easy to raise from seed, whether annuals, biennials, perennials, shrubs or trees. All they need are the correct balance of nutrients, a good air supply and moisture, plus appropriate warmth and light levels.

These days all the mystery surrounding what conditions seed needs to germinate and grow has been removed by the various seed companies, who now sell quality controlled seed in airtight foil packets accompanied by full growing instructions.

Thompson & Morgan provide full growing instructions for their extensive range of seeds at their easily navigable Website  Click Here to Open a New Browser Window For the Thompson & Morgan Site, then simply click on one of the plant pictures

Of course the most natural way to grow seed is to plant it outside directly where you want it to grow, and for some plants that totally resent any form of root disturbance this is almost a mandatory requirement. However, for the majority of plants indoor sowings can be made much earlier, getting your plants off to a good start in the protection of a controlled environment.

But do remember that sowing your plants too early can cause problems.

As mentioned above, it must be stressed that all your equipment must be sterile; that includes your compost. Do not under any circumstances be tempted to re-use old seed or potting compost. T&M
